Steam boiler lockout procedure

A steam boiler holds electrical, chemical, steam and water energy. Here is where it hurts people, and the procedure for yours: the placard for the machine and the written procedure for the binder.

Where a steam boiler hurts people

  • The boiler holds pressure and heat for hours. Let it cool and vent it to 0 before opening anything.
  • Close and lock the gas valve upstream of the burner train, and test for gas before you open the burner.
  • Opening a steam line needs double block and bleed when other boilers share the header.

Write the procedure for your steam boiler

List every source of energy that can move, power or hurt. The placard builds as you go, and the checks run on every change.
