Belt conveyor lockout procedure

A belt conveyor holds electrical and mechanical energy. Here is where it hurts people, and the procedure for yours: the placard for the machine and the written procedure for the binder.

E1M12 energy sources on a typical belt conveyor

Where a belt conveyor hurts people

  • A pull cord or E-stop stops the belt but leaves the drive energized; lock the disconnect.
  • A gravity take-up holds the belt tight with a hanging weight. Block it before you cut or splice the belt.
  • Long lines have more than one drive. Every drive on the section gets its own lock.

Write the procedure for your belt conveyor

List every source of energy that can move, power or hurt. The placard builds as you go, and the checks run on every change.
